Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has successfully delivered quintuplets to a Dar es Salaam woman in a rare medical achievement, with the hospital announcing that it will cover all treatment costs for the mother and her five newborn babies until they are discharged.
The babies three boys and two girls were born on June 13, 2026, to Ms Victoria Mkwizu, a resident of Tabata, Dar es Salaam.
Hospital officials said both the mother and the infants are in stable condition and are continuing to receive specialised medical care.
The successful delivery, one of the few recorded cases of quintuplets in Tanzania, was carried out by a multidisciplinary team of specialists who closely monitored the pregnancy and managed the complex birth.
Speaking from her hospital ward, Ms Mkwizu praised the quality of care she received at the national referral hospital, saying the support from healthcare workers had been instrumental in ensuring a safe delivery.
“I am grateful for the services I have received since I was admitted. The doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals have closely monitored my condition and provided excellent care throughout the pregnancy and delivery,” she said.
On behalf of the hospital’s Executive Director, the Director of Surgical Services, Dr Rachel Mhaville, described the birth as a unique and high-risk case that required intensive monitoring and coordinated efforts from a team of specialists.
She said ensuring the safety of both the mother and the babies had been the hospital’s top priority throughout the pregnancy and delivery process.
“This has been a special case that demanded close follow-up and collaboration among various specialists. We are pleased that both the mother and the babies are progressing well,” said Dr Mhaville.
In a gesture aimed at supporting the family, Dr Mhaville announced that Muhimbili would shoulder all medical expenses incurred by Ms Mkwizu and her children from the date of her admission on May 15, 2026, until they complete treatment and are discharged.
She said the decision reflects the hospital’s commitment to ensuring that mothers and newborns receive quality and safe healthcare services, particularly in complex cases requiring prolonged medical attention.
The development underscores Muhimbili’s growing capacity to handle highly specialised maternal and neonatal cases, supported by advanced medical expertise and equipment.
Medical experts note that quintuplet pregnancies are exceptionally rare and are often associated with significant health risks for both the mother and the babies, making specialised care essential throughout pregnancy and delivery.
Hospital officials said the newborns will continue to be monitored by specialists as they gain strength and meet key developmental milestones before they are allowed to return home.
The successful delivery adds to Muhimbili’s record of handling complex medical cases and highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services in Tanzania.
