Mathias Canal, founder and chief executive officer of Wazohuru Media and Wazohuru Apartments, has been awarded the 2026 Community Service Excellence Award in recognition of his contribution to social development and support for vulnerable groups.

The award was presented on June 5 during the Central Zone Awards ceremony in Dodoma, an event that brought together leaders, entrepreneurs and development stakeholders to celebrate individuals and organisations making a significant impact on society.

Organisers said Canal earned the recognition because of his sustained involvement in community initiatives, charitable activities and efforts aimed at improving the welfare of disadvantaged groups.

They noted that his commitment to social responsibility and community engagement has made him a notable figure in promoting positive change beyond the business sector.

Receiving the award, Canal said the recognition reflected the collective efforts of communities, partners and institutions that have worked alongside him in various development programmes.

“This award is not only a personal achievement but also a reminder that meaningful progress is achieved when individuals and organisations work together to address challenges facing society,” he said.

He pledged to continue supporting initiatives that promote education, social welfare and community empowerment, adding that businesses have an important role to play in advancing inclusive development.

Stakeholders attending the ceremony described the award as recognition of Canal’s efforts to align private-sector success with community development.

They said his work demonstrates how entrepreneurship can be used as a platform for creating social value and improving livelihoods.

The recognition adds to Canal’s growing profile as a business leader committed to community service, underscoring the increasing role of corporate and individual philanthropy in supporting Tanzania’s development agenda.

Observers said the award should encourage more business leaders and entrepreneurs to invest in programmes that address social challenges and contribute to sustainable development across the country.
