Chunya mining forum pushes modern technology to transform small-scale mining

More than 1,000 small-scale miners in Chunya District, Mbeya Region, are set to benefit from modern mining technologies and improved mineral processing methods aimed at boosting productivity while protecting the environment.

The initiative follows a seven-day mining exhibition organized by Green Mining Awareness Company, which has brought together more than 15 local and international companies showcasing modern, safe and environmentally friendly mining innovations.

The exhibition seeks to equip small-scale miners with practical knowledge on the use of modern equipment, improved extraction techniques, and safer alternatives to harmful chemicals commonly used in artisanal mining activities.

Speaking during the event, Executive Director of Green Mining Awareness Company, Engineer Francis Mlanga, said the forum is designed to bridge the technology gap facing small-scale miners and promote responsible mining practices.

He said many miners continue to operate in unsurveyed areas, a situation that has contributed to environmental degradation, low productivity, and unsafe mining practices.

“We have observed major challenges where miners are working in areas that have not been properly surveyed, leading to environmental damage and inefficient extraction methods,” said Engineer Mlanga.

He added that lack of capital and limited knowledge on modern mining technologies remain key challenges affecting small-scale miners.

To address this, the initiative is linking miners with financial institutions and technology providers to improve access to funding and modern equipment.

Engineer Mlanga noted that the programme targets more than 1,000 small-scale miners in Chunya and is expected to extend to other mining areas across the country, strengthening awareness on safe and sustainable mining.

He further said the exhibition is expected to open new opportunities for stakeholders in the mining sector to adopt modern technologies that improve efficiency while ensuring environmental conservation and long-term sustainability of resources.

Small-scale miner Rehema Madusa welcomed the initiative, saying it comes at the right time when many miners are struggling with limited access to technology and capital.

She said most small-scale miners still rely on traditional methods and the use of hazardous chemicals due to lack of training and financial constraints.

“This initiative is very important to us because it gives us access to knowledge on modern mining technologies. Many small-scale miners are still using outdated methods due to lack of education and capital,” she said.

The forum is expected to play a significant role in transforming the small-scale mining sector in Chunya by promoting innovation, improving safety standards, and increasing miners’ income while safeguarding the environment.
