Tanzania’s national volleyball team, Almas Kings, has made a difficult start to its campaign in the Africa Zone Five Qualifiers for the African Nations Championship after suffering a straight-set defeat in their opening match.
The qualifiers, which are currently underway and scheduled to conclude in June 2026 in Uganda, are serving as a pathway to the African Nations Championship set for September this year in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
On June 1, 2026, Tanzania lost 3-0 to Kenya in their opening fixture played in Rwanda, where the competition is taking place.
Kenya controlled the match from the beginning, taking the first set 25-20, before edging a closely contested second set 28-26. They sealed the victory with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Despite the setback, Almas Kings still have a chance to recover as the tournament progresses, with several matches remaining in the qualification campaign.
The team will be back in action on June 2, 2026, when they face Burundi in a match scheduled to start at 12:00 noon local time in Rwanda.
Coaches are expected to review the team’s performance, particularly the errors made in reception, defence, and coordination during the match against Kenya, as they prepare for the next challenge.
The Zone Five tournament brings together national teams from across the region competing for limited slots in the continental championship.
A win against Burundi will be crucial for Tanzania’s hopes of staying in contention and keeping alive their qualification ambitions.
