Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila has unveiled a raft of measures aimed at improving the city's appearance, strengthening security, and enhancing environmental management as Tanzania prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Addressing a special meeting that brought together councillors, ward executive officers, street chairpersons, street executive officers and district commissioners from the region's five districts, Mr Chalamila directed garage operators and carpenters to remove scrap metal, abandoned vehicle parts and worn-out furniture from roadsides within one month, warning that such materials have continued to tarnish the city's image.

He said Dar es Salaam, as the country's commercial capital and a key diplomatic centre, must project a clean and orderly environment capable of hosting major international events and attracting investment.

The Regional Commissioner also called on councillors, ward and street leaders, as well as district authorities, to strengthen community-based security initiatives and work closely with residents to safeguard peace and stability across the region.

Mr Chalamila stressed that the government would not allow any actions that could undermine public order, noting that local leaders have a responsibility to ensure their areas remain peaceful and secure.

Referring to reports circulating on social media about possible demonstrations, he urged ward and street leaders to remain vigilant and continue engaging residents on the importance of preserving peace and social harmony.

On environmental management, Mr Chalamila directed local government authorities to intensify cleanliness campaigns, enforce sanitation regulations and address indiscriminate waste disposal.

He said maintaining a clean city was essential not only for public health but also for protecting the country's reputation ahead of AFCON 2027.

"Tanzania has earned the honour of hosting a major continental tournament. It is therefore important that our cities reflect the standards expected of an international host nation," he said.

He further instructed municipal authorities to ensure that buildings located along major roads are properly maintained and painted to improve the city's overall appearance.

The Regional Commissioner also set July 30 as the deadline for the commencement of a public-private partnership arrangement for the management of the Pugu Kinyamwezi dumpsite.

He urged all councils in the city to establish proper waste disposal facilities and expand public awareness programmes on waste separation and recycling.

In another directive, Mr Chalamila prohibited the indiscriminate posting of advertisements in public spaces and instructed local government directors not to issue licences for bars operating within residential neighbourhoods, including Masaki and Oysterbay.

Earlier, Dar es Salaam Regional Administrative Secretary Abdul Mhinte underscored the importance of effective use of residential addresses, saying the system plays a critical role in identifying residents and enhancing security management.

He noted that accurate residential addressing would assist authorities in improving service delivery, strengthening community safety and supporting broader efforts to maintain peace and order across the region.
