Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Hassan Abbasi, has underscored the importance of strengthening sustainable forest management and forest-based value chains to improve livelihoods while protecting the environment.

Speaking during the Second Steering Board Meeting of the Forest and Value Chain Development Project (FORLAND) in Dar es Salaam on June 22, Dr Abbasi said the partnership between Tanzania and Finland continues to play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development, particularly among smallholder tree growers and communities engaged in forest conservation.

The meeting was co-chaired by Finland's Deputy Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Tomi Lounio, reflecting the two countries' longstanding cooperation in advancing sustainable land use and forestry development.

Dr Abbasi said the project has become an important platform for supporting community participation in forest management while creating economic opportunities through improved value chains.

He noted that a key item on the meeting's agenda was the review of the draft 2026/27 work plan and budget, which will guide the project's priorities, activities and resource allocation in the coming financial year.

According to him, the proposed plan seeks to ensure that project interventions remain inclusive, environmentally sustainable and capable of generating tangible economic benefits for local communities.

He urged board members and stakeholders to contribute their expertise and recommendations to strengthen the project's implementation and maximise its impact.

"Tanzania's forest resources have significant potential to support economic growth, environmental conservation and community development. Through collaboration and effective management, we can build a resilient forest-based economy that benefits both people and nature," Dr Abbasi said.

The FORLAND project focuses on promoting sustainable land use, improving forest management practices and developing value chains that create income opportunities while supporting conservation efforts.

The meeting, held at the National College of Tourism (NCT) in Dar es Salaam, brought together government officials, development partners and forestry experts to review progress and discuss priorities for the next phase of implementation.
