Government expands knowledge centres to strengthen HIV services

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding Knowledge Centres across the country as part of broader efforts to strengthen HIV and AIDS prevention, counselling and public health education services.

The Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Jim Yonazi, made the remarks on May 19, 2026, during an inspection tour of Knowledge Centres in Dumila, Morogoro Region, and Kibaigwa in Dodoma Region.

Dr. Yonazi said the centres have continued to play an important role in helping communities access free health education, counselling and testing services, particularly on HIV and AIDS.

He called on Tanzanians to make greater use of the facilities in order to understand their health conditions and obtain accurate information on disease prevention and treatment.

“We urge wananchi to continue using these Knowledge Centres in large numbers so they can benefit from counselling, health services and education, especially on HIV and AIDS infections. The government will continue establishing more centres across the country,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary noted that the government is now working on a new arrangement that will see local government authorities take a bigger role in running the centres to improve efficiency and accessibility of services.

He said the government plans to hold discussions with directors of all councils nationwide to develop a system that will enable the centres to operate under council management instead of relying entirely on the central government through the Tanzania Commission for AIDS.

According to Dr. Yonazi, involving councils directly in the management of the centres will help bring services closer to communities and improve coordination of health programmes at the grassroots level.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Tanzania Commission for AIDS, Dr. Adam Mrisho, said the commission would implement all directives issued during the tour and work on challenges identified at the facilities.

Dr. Mrisho said TACAIDS remains committed to improving HIV prevention, education and counselling services to ensure Tanzanians continue receiving quality and timely support.
