The Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) has intensified efforts to strengthen the country’s measurement systems following a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held on May 16, 2026, in preparation for World Metrology Day.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from across the measurement and regulatory ecosystem under the leadership of the Director General of the Wakala wa Vipimo (WMA), Alban Kihulla

Discussions focused on improving accuracy, fairness, and trust in measurement services as a foundation for protecting consumers and supporting economic growth.

The session forms part of national preparations for the upcoming World Metrology Day, which will be marked on May 20, 2026.

The global commemoration highlights the critical role of measurement science in trade, industry, innovation, and policy-making.

Stakeholders at the meeting emphasized that reliable and standardized measurement systems are essential in ensuring fairness in business transactions, reducing disputes between traders and consumers, and promoting transparency in markets.

They noted that accurate measurements not only protect the public but also strengthen confidence in both formal and informal economic activities.

It was further observed that strong measurement systems contribute directly to national development by ensuring that goods and services are traded on an equal and verifiable basis.

This, stakeholders said, supports business growth across all levels, from small-scale traders to large industries, while reinforcing trust in regulatory institutions responsible for overseeing market practices.

The meeting also stressed the need to enhance public awareness on the importance of accurate measurements, particularly in sectors such as trade, manufacturing, agriculture, and consumer protection.

Participants called for sustained collaboration between government institutions, the private sector, and development partners to modernize measurement infrastructure and improve compliance and enforcement mechanisms.

As part of the discussions, stakeholders highlighted this year’s World Metrology Day theme, “Measurements: Building Trust in Policy Making,” noting that it reflects the increasing importance of data accuracy in shaping sound public policies and ensuring effective governance.

They agreed that credible measurement systems are central to evidence-based decision-making across all sectors of the economy.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to work closely with WMA in strengthening the country’s measurement systems, with a shared goal of building a more transparent, fair, and efficient market environment that serves the interests of all Tanzanians.
