The World Customs Organization East and Southern Africa Regional Office for Capacity Building (WCO ESA ROCB) has pledged to continue strengthening the professional capacity of customs officers in its 24 member countries as part of efforts to improve customs services and revenue collection across the region.
Speaking during the World Customs Organization East and Southern Africa (WCO ESA) Regional Meeting held on Monday in Zanzibar, WCO ESA ROCB Director Ms. Josephine Manyasi said the institution remains focused on equipping customs officers with modern skills to match the changing global trade environment.
She said WCO ESA has introduced a number of strategies aimed at helping customs departments in member states improve service delivery and operational efficiency through continuous professional training.
Manyasi noted that the regional meeting provides an important platform for member countries to exchange experiences, share best practices and discuss the use of modern technology in customs administration.
“We want all member countries to move in the same direction in terms of customs procedures and systems in order to strengthen efficiency, transparency and cooperation among customs authorities,” she said.
She added that continued training for customs officers is expected to improve professionalism, boost revenue collection and ensure customs services keep pace with rapid technological and international trade developments.
The WCO ESA region brings together 24 member states, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Ethiopia, Zambia and Zimbabwe among others.
