The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has strengthened the safety and efficiency of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) following the introduction of advanced Ford Ranger and Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicles fitted with modern laser inspection technology.
The vehicles, which have been specially modified into Hi-Rail units, are designed to operate both on roads and railway tracks.
They will be used to inspect and monitor the SGR network, enabling engineers to quickly detect defects and potential risks along the railway line with high accuracy.
This investment marks another important step by TRC in improving railway safety, reliability, and service delivery as passenger and cargo operations continue to expand across the country.
The Ford Ranger units are designed for fast movement and quick response. They will be used for routine patrols and rapid inspections, allowing technical teams to reach affected areas within a short time whenever incidents or technical issues occur.
On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicles are built for heavy-duty operations in challenging environments.
They will support inspections in remote and difficult-to-access areas while carrying specialised equipment needed for railway maintenance work.
Both types of vehicles have been fitted with rail wheel systems, enabling them to easily transition between road and rail operations, improving flexibility and efficiency in monitoring railway infrastructure.
According to TRC, the introduction of these vehicles will significantly improve inspection speed and coverage, helping reduce delays and ensuring uninterrupted railway services for passengers and cargo.
The vehicles are equipped with advanced laser-based technology capable of scanning railway tracks in real time.
The system can detect even the smallest structural defects, misalignments, or weaknesses that may not be visible through traditional inspection methods.
This technology also supports preventive maintenance by identifying risks early, helping to reduce the likelihood of accidents and improving overall safety along the SGR corridor.
TRC railway inspector Manyama Mazula said the new equipment will transform inspection work, describing the vehicles as an important tool for ensuring safe operations.
“These vehicles have greatly improved our ability to monitor the railway. They act as our eyes along the tracks and help us respond quickly to any challenges,” he said.
Passengers have also welcomed the development, saying it has increased their confidence in using the SGR services.
Frequent passenger Akwilina Msangi said the technology gives travellers peace of mind.
“Knowing that TRC can detect problems before they occur makes us feel safer when travelling,” she said.
Another passenger, Zuberi Mkwama, praised TRC for investing in modern inspection systems, noting that the move will improve both passenger safety and cargo transport efficiency.
The introduction of these laser-equipped inspection vehicles reflects TRC’s ongoing commitment to modernising railway operations and aligning Tanzania’s transport infrastructure with international safety standards.
Overall, the initiative is expected to further strengthen the reliability and safety of the Dar es Salaam–Dodoma SGR line, which continues to play a vital role in connecting people, businesses, and the national economy.
