The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) and the National Health Insurance Fund National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in order to improve the implementation of Universal Health Insurance and expand access to quality health services for all Tanzanians.
The discussions were held on May 18, 2026, between the Commissioner for Insurance at TIRA, Dr. Baghayo Saqware, and the Director General of NHIF, Dr. Irene C. Isaka.
The two leaders focused on improving coordination between the two institutions to ensure efficient delivery and proper management of health insurance services in the country.
The meeting emphasized the importance of working together as Tanzania moves closer to achieving Universal Health Insurance, a national goal aimed at ensuring that every citizen is protected from high medical costs and can access affordable healthcare services.
During the discussions, Dr. Saqware said TIRA is fully committed to supporting the government’s vision of ensuring that all Tanzanians are covered under health insurance by 2030.
He noted that strong collaboration with NHIF and other stakeholders is essential in building a reliable and well-regulated insurance system that serves the interests of citizens.
He added that TIRA will continue to provide technical guidance and strengthen supervision within the insurance sector to ensure transparency, accountability, and better service delivery for the public.
On her part, Dr. Isaka thanked TIRA for its continued cooperation, saying the partnership has been important in improving the performance and efficiency of health insurance services in the country.
She reaffirmed NHIF’s commitment to working closely with regulators and other partners to ensure that Universal Health Insurance is effectively implemented for the benefit of all citizens.
She further noted that NHIF will continue to expand coverage and improve service delivery so that more Tanzanians, including those in underserved areas, can access quality and affordable healthcare.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by key institutions to strengthen the national health insurance system and ensure that no citizen is left behind in accessing essential health services.
