The Tanzania Bureau of Standards, Tanzania Bureau of Standards, has hailed its achievements over the past five decades, saying the institution has played a critical role in strengthening quality control systems, protecting consumers and supporting the country’s industrial and trade growth.

Speaking during a press briefing in Dar es Salaam on May 15, 2026, TBS Director General Dr. Ashura Katunzi said the agency has successfully established and managed effective product quality and safety systems that have contributed significantly to Tanzania’s economic productivity and industrial development.

She said TBS has continued to position itself as a key national institution in safeguarding consumer health and ensuring products manufactured locally comply with both national and international standards.

“As the country’s economy has expanded and market demands continued to evolve, TBS has also widened the scope of its services and strengthened its role in supporting industries, trade and national economic transformation,” she said.

Dr. Katunzi noted that over the years the institution has registered major milestones in infrastructure development, enhancement of laboratory competence, adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and expansion of international recognition in standards management.

According to her, the improvements have enabled local manufacturers to access regional and global markets more easily through products that meet internationally accepted quality standards.

She described the 50-year milestone as both a moment of pride and an opportunity for reflection and strategic planning for the future.

“Reaching 50 years is a remarkable achievement that deserves recognition, but it is also a chance for us to assess ourselves and strengthen strategies for continued excellence in delivering our responsibilities,” she said.

As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, TBS will launch a special commemorative book documenting the institution’s history, achievements and contribution to national development since its establishment.

The celebrations will also feature a series of activities, including the Viwango Marathon scheduled for May 23, 2026 at the Leaders Club Grounds in Dar es Salaam.

In addition, TBS will organize the Viwango Business Forum on June 5, 2026 at Mlimani City Conference Hall, bringing together industrialists, traders, investors and standards experts to discuss the role of standards in promoting trade competitiveness and industrial growth.

The institution will also host a Golden Jubilee Gala Dinner to honour retired and serving employees whose contributions have shaped the success of the organisation over the years.

Beyond the celebrations, TBS is also undertaking community outreach initiatives, including support for a hospital with special needs as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.

The climax of the Golden Jubilee celebrations is expected to take place on June 19, 2026, bringing together government leaders, private sector representatives and key stakeholders from the business and industrial sectors.

Dr. Katunzi called on stakeholders and members of the public to actively participate in the celebrations, saying the events will provide valuable opportunities for networking, learning, promoting products and services, and strengthening business partnerships.
