Strong Grid Project to boost reliable electricity supply across Tanzania

By The Respondents Reporter

The Government of Tanzania has said that the implementation of the Strong Grid Project, valued at more than Sh1.1 trillion, will significantly improve the availability and reliability of electricity across the country as demand continues to rise in both rural and urban areas.

Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba said the project is part of the government’s wider plan to strengthen electricity transmission and distribution systems so that power generated in different parts of the country can reach households, industries, and business centres without interruption.

He made the remarks on May 17, 2026, during his working visit to Chemba District in Dodoma Region, where he also met citizens, listened to their concerns, and addressed various service delivery challenges.

The Prime Minister explained that studies carried out during the implementation of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project showed that electricity demand in Tanzania would continue to grow rapidly due to increased investment in industries, expansion of rural electrification, and growth of mining activities.

This situation led President Samia Suluhu Hassan to direct the government to begin the Strong Grid Project as a long-term solution to strengthen the national power system.

He said the project focuses not only on expanding transmission lines but also on improving the stability of the entire electricity network to reduce power interruptions and ensure a more dependable supply across the country.

Mwigulu noted that the government has already started implementing different phases of the project in several regions.

He said he recently visited some of the sites, including the Mkata project in Tanga Region, where he laid the foundation stone.

Once completed, the project is expected to improve electricity supply in Kilindi and Handeni districts, helping to boost economic activities and improve access to essential services.

He further said the government continues to prioritize major energy projects, including the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, which has a capacity of 2,115 megawatts.

The project has already been completed and is now supplying electricity to the National Grid.

He added that the completion of the hydropower project has helped to reduce power shortages that previously affected many parts of the country, making electricity more stable for households, businesses, and public services.

The Prime Minister assured citizens that the government will continue investing in the energy sector to support economic growth, attract investment, and improve living standards.

He said reliable electricity remains a key foundation for Tanzania’s industrial development and overall national progress.
