The Regional Commissioner of Rukwa Region, Mhe. Charles Makongoro Nyerere, has commended the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) for strengthening revenue collection systems and improving service delivery to taxpayers, saying the progress is directly supporting national development and the expansion of essential social services.
He made the remarks on May 19, 2026, when closing the third-quarter performance review meeting for the 2025/2026 financial year of the Southern Highlands Zone, held in Sumbawanga Municipality.
The meeting brought together TRA leaders and staff from Songwe, Mbeya, Rukwa, Iringa, Ruvuma and Njombe regions to assess performance and agree on strategies to further improve revenue collection and service delivery.
Mhe. Nyerere said TRA remains a key institution in enabling government development programmes through domestic revenue mobilization. He noted that taxes collected by the authority continue to finance critical sectors such as health, education, roads, and other public services that benefit citizens across the country.
He urged TRA officials to maintain high standards of professionalism, integrity and accountability in their daily operations, saying these values are essential in strengthening public trust and encouraging voluntary tax compliance.
The Regional Commissioner also called for stronger efforts in monitoring tax compliance, including following up on tax arrears and closing loopholes that may lead to tax evasion.
He stressed that a fair and effective tax system requires all eligible taxpayers to fulfill their obligations in order to support national development priorities.
He further noted that improved compliance would increase government revenue and reduce dependence on external funding, enabling the country to finance more development projects using its own resources.
He emphasized the importance of cooperation between TRA and taxpayers in building a transparent, predictable and efficient tax environment.
On her part, the TRA Rukwa Regional Manager and Chairperson of the meeting, Husna Nyange, said the Southern Highlands Zone has continued to record strong performance in revenue collection due to the commitment of TRA staff and improved cooperation from taxpayers.
She said ongoing reforms within TRA, including digital tax systems and taxpayer education initiatives, have simplified tax processes and improved efficiency in service delivery, leading to better compliance levels.
Ms. Nyange called on participants to ensure full implementation of all resolutions agreed during the meeting, saying this will help sustain the positive performance and strengthen revenue collection efforts across the zone.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between government institutions and taxpayers in supporting Tanzania’s development agenda, with stakeholders agreeing on the need to enhance efficiency, accountability and compliance for continued economic growth.
