The Minister for Defence and National Service, Dr. Rhimo Nyansaho (MP), has held high-level discussions with Regional Commissioners from Tanzania’s border regions aimed at strengthening national security coordination and improving the protection of the country’s frontiers.
The meeting took place on May 20, 2026, at the National Defence Headquarters in Kikombo, Dodoma, bringing together senior government leaders responsible for security and regional administration.
The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the Ministry of Defence, security agencies, and regional authorities to address emerging security challenges along Tanzania’s borders, including cross-border crime, illegal movements, and other threats that may affect peace and stability.
The meeting was attended by CPA Amos Makalla (Arusha), Ambassador Batilda Burian (Tanga), Colonel Evans Mtambi (Mara), Jabir Makame (Songwe), Colonel Yahya Kido (Kagera), and Colonel Donald Msengi (Mtwara).
Dr. Nyansaho emphasized that border regions remain a strategic priority for national security due to their exposure to cross-border activities.
He called for stronger coordination mechanisms and faster sharing of security information between local leaders and defence institutions to ensure timely response to potential threats.
He further underscored the importance of preventive security approaches, noting that early communication and collaboration are key in maintaining peace and protecting citizens.
The Regional Commissioners reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with defence and security organs to safeguard their regions.
They highlighted ongoing efforts to manage cross-border interactions while ensuring that communities continue to live in peace and stability.
They also acknowledged the importance of strengthening local awareness on security matters, especially in border communities where interactions between countries are frequent.
As part of the engagement, the commissioners toured the National Defence Headquarters in Kikombo, where they were briefed on national defence operations and coordination systems used to manage security across the country.
The visit was described as an important step in deepening collaboration between national security leadership and regional administrations, particularly in strategically sensitive border areas.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to reinforce cooperation, enhance coordination, and ensure continued peace, stability, and security for all citizens living in Tanzania’s border regions.
