Border residents pledge cooperation with TRA to curb smuggling in Ruvuma

Residents living at the Mkenda border area between Tanzania and Mozambique in Ruvuma Region have assured the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) of their full cooperation in the fight against smuggling, saying they will not engage in illegal trade and will instead support authorities by reporting any suspicious activities.

The residents made the commitment on May 16, 2026, during a special meeting with TRA officials who visited the area to provide education on tax compliance, explain the dangers of smuggling, highlight proper procedures for importing goods, and listen to challenges and views from the community.

The engagement aimed at strengthening cooperation between border communities and tax authorities in order to protect public health, ensure only quality-standard goods enter the country, and increase government revenue through lawful trade.

During the meeting, Mkenda kivukoni village government chairman in Nakawale village thanked TRA for reaching out directly to the community, saying the education provided had significantly improved understanding of import procedures and the risks associated with smuggling.

He noted that many residents previously lacked clear information on legal trade processes but now better understand how illegal goods can harm both the economy and public health.

He added that the community is now more aware of its role in supporting national development through tax compliance and lawful business practices.

TRA officials emphasized that smuggling not only denies the government revenue needed for development projects but also exposes citizens to unsafe and substandard products.

They urged residents to remain vigilant and report any illegal activities along the border.

They also encouraged continued dialogue between the authority and border communities, saying such engagement is key to building trust and improving voluntary compliance with tax laws.

The meeting was part of TRA’s ongoing outreach program aimed at educating citizens in border areas and strengthening cooperation in combating illegal trade activities.
