Accurate measurements vital for Tanzania’s development planning

Accurate measurements are playing an increasingly important role in Tanzania’s economic planning and policy formulation, the Tanzania Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) has said.

Speaking in Dodoma during activities marking World Metrology Day commemorated annually on May 20 WMA Director of Technical Services Francis Olwero said reliable measurement systems help the government make informed decisions in key sectors including trade, agriculture, industry and service delivery.

Olwero said accurate data collected through verified measurements enables authorities to formulate effective development policies while strengthening transparency and efficiency in the economy.

He warned that the use of inaccurate measurements could distort important production and trade statistics, resulting in poor planning and misuse of national resources.

“Accurate measurements are the foundation of sound development decisions because they provide reliable information needed for planning and implementation,” he said.

Olwero added that WMA will continue educating traders and the public on the importance of using certified weighing scales and approved measuring instruments to protect both consumers and businesses.

He noted that proper measurement systems are also essential in promoting fair trade, improving market confidence and enhancing Tanzania’s economic competitiveness.

World Metrology Day is commemorated globally every May 20 to highlight the contribution of measurement science in economic growth, industrial development and consumer protection.
