Tanzanians urged to reject social media misuse to protect peace

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzanians have been urged to take personal responsibility in safeguarding peace by avoiding the misuse of social media, with a call for citizens to act as ambassadors of unity from the family level to the national stage.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Kiwalani resident Zakhia Mussa said maintaining peace is essential for the country’s continued stability, investment growth and social development. She stressed that Tanzania’s reputation as a peaceful nation depends on the daily actions of its people.

She noted that communities free from violence, conflict and social tensions are more likely to build a stable and secure nation.

Such an environment allows citizens to carry out economic and social activities without fear, contributing to overall development.

Ms Mussa also highlighted the growing influence of social media, urging users to treat it as a tool for development rather than a platform for spreading hatred, misinformation or incitement. She warned that false and inflammatory content can easily create panic and divisions within society.

She said misuse of social media has the potential to fuel religious, ethnic and political tensions, putting national unity at risk.

Tanzania, she added, has maintained peace for decades, and protecting that legacy requires discipline and responsibility, especially in the digital space.

She called on citizens to verify information before sharing it and to reject any content that threatens harmony, stressing that peace begins with individual choices both online and offline.
