Tanzania’s Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, has presented the ministry’s 2026/27 budget to Parliament, outlining reliable electricity supply as a central priority to drive economic and social development.

Presenting the budget on April 22, 2026, in Dodoma, Ndejembi said the government will focus on expanding generation capacity through key projects, including the full rollout of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant, further phases of the Kishapu solar project following the addition of 50MW to the national grid, and the Malagarasi hydropower project in Kigoma, expected to generate 49.5MW.

Ndejembi said Tanzania’s installed power capacity had risen by 12.17 percent, reaching 4,522.54MW in March 2026, up from 4,031.71MW in 2025, driven by the completion of several projects, including the first phase of the Kishapu solar plant.

He added that transmission infrastructure expanded to 8,500.38 kilometres by March 2026, from 7,809.67 kilometres a year earlier, marking a 9 percent increase.

The minister also highlighted ongoing improvements in service delivery through digitalization, including the rollout of smart meters, with 105,739 customers connected as of March 2026.

Electricity access has also improved, rising from an average of 78.4 percent in 2020 to 85.5 percent, reflecting continued investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure
