REA drives rural energy growth and transforms communities across Tanzania

By The Respondents Reporter

The Rural Energy Agency (REA) is continuing to drive major transformation in Tanzania’s energy sector, with its rural electrification programmes and clean cooking energy initiatives significantly improving both economic and social conditions in villages across the country.

The agency’s interventions have been widely credited with narrowing the gap between rural and urban areas by expanding access to reliable electricity and promoting modern, cleaner energy solutions that support sustainable development and improved living standards.

Speaking on April 23, 2026, the Member of Parliament for Sikonge and former REA Director General, Amos Maganga, praised the agency for its continued efforts in delivering impactful projects that are reshaping rural communities.

Maganga said REA’s work has played a key role in stimulating rural economies by enabling businesses to operate more efficiently and for longer hours, while also improving access to essential services such as health and education.

He noted that the presence of electricity in villages has transformed service delivery in public institutions, allowing health facilities to improve care through better equipment and enabling schools to enhance learning through modern teaching tools.

“I sincerely commend REA for the excellent work they are doing across the country. The projects implemented have boosted rural economic growth and improved the quality of social services,” said Maganga.

He added that there is now a clear reduction in the development gap between rural and urban areas, as many villages are increasingly enjoying services that were once only accessible in towns and cities.

Maganga further emphasized that energy access remains a critical driver of national development, noting that REA’s initiatives align with the government’s broader agenda of inclusive growth and industrialisation.

In addition to electrification projects, REA has also intensified efforts to promote clean cooking technologies aimed at reducing reliance on traditional biomass fuels such as firewood and charcoal.

These efforts are designed to improve health outcomes, particularly for women and children, while also contributing to environmental conservation.

Through awareness campaigns and distribution of improved cooking solutions, the agency is encouraging households to adopt safer and more efficient energy alternatives, in line with the country’s clean energy transition goals.

Meanwhile, Members of Parliament who visited the REA exhibition booth also expressed satisfaction with the agency’s performance, commending Director General Engineer Hassan Saidy for his leadership and commitment to accelerating energy access projects.

The legislators noted that under his leadership, REA has strengthened coordination, improved efficiency in project implementation, and expanded energy services to underserved communities across the country.

They said the agency’s approach has enhanced accountability and ensured that energy investments translate into real and visible benefits for citizens, particularly in rural areas.

Across Tanzania, REA’s projects continue to deliver tangible results. Small businesses are growing due to reliable electricity, youth are engaging in new economic activities, and public services in health and education are improving significantly.

The availability of electricity has also attracted investment in rural areas, as businesses increasingly view energy access as a key factor for expansion and sustainability.

Stakeholders have emphasized the importance of continued investment in rural energy infrastructure to sustain the momentum of development and ensure that no community is left behind.

As REA continues to implement its programmes, focus remains on expanding coverage, ensuring affordability, and integrating renewable energy solutions to strengthen sustainability and support the country’s clean energy goals.

The recognition from lawmakers and development stakeholders reflects growing confidence in REA’s role as a key driver of rural transformation and national development.
