Posta, HESLB partner to ease access to Student Loans

Tanzania is taking another step to expand access to higher education financing after Tanzania Posts Corporation and the Higher Education Students' Loans Board signed a partnership aimed at simplifying loan application services for students nationwide.

The agreement, signed on April 22, 2026, is designed to bring loan services closer to young people, particularly those in underserved and remote areas.

By leveraging Posta’s extensive nationwide network, the initiative is expected to reduce barriers that have long affected access to student financing.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Postmaster General Macrice Daniel Mbodo said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to improving service delivery and ensuring that more Tanzanian youth can access higher education opportunities.

“I commend HESLB for these transformative efforts and for partnering with Posta so that together we can improve and simplify access to loan application services for young people aspiring to join higher education,” he said.

He noted that Posta has already invested in capacity building across its offices, equipping staff from district to regional levels with the skills needed to guide applicants throughout the loan process.

The move, he added, aims to ensure that no eligible student misses out due to lack of information or procedural challenges.

Mbodo also pointed to the corporation’s broader modernization agenda, highlighting ongoing digital transformation efforts and new services such as Swifpack, which integrates parcel and passenger transport, as part of Posta’s strategy to remain relevant in a fast-changing service environment.

On his part, HESLB Executive Director Dr. Bill Kiwia said the board has disbursed more than TZS 9 trillion in loans to students across the country, reflecting the government’s sustained investment in human capital development.

He explained that the partnership with Posta will significantly improve outreach and operational efficiency, especially as the board continues to digitize its services.

“With Posta’s wide network, we are confident that loan services will now reach more students in a timely and efficient manner,” he said.

The collaboration comes at a time when demand for higher education financing continues to rise, with thousands of students seeking support each year.

By decentralizing access points and strengthening guidance mechanisms, the initiative is expected to make the application process more inclusive and accessible.

Analysts say the partnership could play a key role in bridging gaps between urban and rural applicants, ensuring that geographical location no longer limits access to education financing.

For many young Tanzanians, the agreement signals renewed hope that financial constraints will become less of a barrier to pursuing higher education.
