Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi on Tuesday inspected the AFCON Fumba City project in the Urban West Region, as the Isles accelerate preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The inspection, conducted on April 14, 2026, focused on the progress of a modern stadium under construction at Fumba, one of the key facilities expected to serve the continental tournament that will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
Dr Mwinyi was accompanied by the Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Riziki Pembe Juma, along with officials and stakeholders overseeing the multi-billion project.
At the site, the President reviewed construction progress of the 35,000-seat stadium being built by Turkish firm ORKUN Group, which is designed to meet international standards set by the Confederation of African Football.
He also assessed the broader AFCON Fumba City master plan, which integrates sports infrastructure with urban development.
The project includes plans for a hospital, modern road networks, retail centres, restaurants and other essential services intended to support both the tournament and long-term urban growth.
The development is part of Zanzibar’s wider strategy to position itself as a competitive destination for international events while improving local infrastructure and services.
With less than two years to the 2027 finals, the government has intensified oversight of strategic projects, signalling its commitment to delivering facilities that meet continental standards and timelines.
