Former President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on Wednesday held talks with former Malawi leader Lazarus Chakwera in Dar es Salaam, as efforts intensify to ease political tensions and promote reconciliation following Tanzania’s 2025 General Election.
Dr Chakwera is in the country as the Commonwealth Special Envoy, a role he assumed under Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, tasked with supporting dialogue and confidence-building among key stakeholders.
He arrived on April 8 and has since been engaging a broad spectrum of actors, including government officials, political parties, civil society groups, religious leaders and diplomats, in consultations aimed at building consensus on the way forward.
His mission comes against the backdrop of tensions linked to the October 29, 2025 polls, with the Commonwealth stepping in through its diplomatic “Good Offices” mechanism to encourage peaceful engagement and inclusive dialogue.
During his stay, Dr Chakwera also met President Samia Suluhu Hassan, where discussions centred on laying the groundwork for a national dialogue process expected to address governance concerns, strengthen institutions and sustain long-term political stability.
The meeting with Mr Kikwete, who remains an influential figure in regional diplomacy, adds weight to the ongoing mediation efforts, signalling continued engagement at the highest levels as Tanzania navigates a path towards political consensus.
