JOWUTA calls for greater media inclusion in May Day celebrations

The Tanzania Journalists and Media Workers Union (JOWUTA) has called for greater involvement of media institutions in the upcoming national May Day celebrations to be held in Njombe Region.

JOWUTA is participating in the celebrations for the first time this year as a member of the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA). The union also plans to recognize outstanding media workers by awarding them for their contributions to the profession.

Speaking during a preparatory meeting, JOWUTA National Chairperson Mussa Juma commended the national May Day Information and Publicity Committee for its efforts, but noted that the level of media engagement remains insufficient.

He stressed the need for the committee to involve a wider range of media platforms, including social media, newspapers, television, and radio, to enhance public awareness and participation.

Juma also emphasized that the content produced should highlight the unique economic and tourism attractions found in Njombe Region.

With a membership of over 400 journalists across the country, he said JOWUTA is ready to collaborate with May Day committees to strengthen communication efforts and promote the importance of the celebrations among Tanzanians.

Meanwhile, the National Chairperson of the Research, Academic and Allied Workers Union, Jane Mihanji, urged the committee to consider supporting newspapers that publish special May Day editions.

She noted that such publications, including special supplements like Uhuru wa Kijani, have been instrumental in showcasing the implementation of development projects by both the government and private sector, often distributed free to thousands of people during the celebrations.

On his part, the President of Trade Union Congress of Tanzania, Tumaini Nyamhokya, said Njombe offers a wide range of opportunities that can be promoted during the May Day event.

He highlighted key sectors such as large-scale avocado farming, potato production, timber, waterfalls, and tourism as areas that can attract attention and investment through the celebrations.

In a related development, the national May Day organizing committee has inspected the ongoing construction of the May Day grounds and called for increased pace to ensure completion by April 25 this year.
