Government takes strong action to reduce maternal and child deaths

The government has introduced new and strengthened measures aimed at improving maternal and child health services across the country, with a clear focus on reducing preventable deaths during pregnancy and childbirth.

The reforms, which are already being implemented, aim to ensure that every expectant mother receives safer and more reliable healthcare services, including timely emergency care when complications arise during delivery.

This was announced on April 17, 2026 in Dar es Salaam by the Safe Motherhood Programme Coordinator, Dr. Phineas Sospeter, during a technical meeting bringing together reproductive health experts.

Dr. Sospeter said the new interventions focus on improving antenatal and postnatal care services, strengthening early detection and response systems for risks during pregnancy, and enhancing the ability of health workers to manage emergency obstetric cases.

He emphasized that the government is prioritizing quality care at all levels of health facilities, especially in rural and underserved areas where maternal health challenges remain significant.

“Strengthening our health system means ensuring that no mother or child loses their life due to avoidable complications,” he noted, adding that continuous training of health workers is also part of the ongoing reforms.

In addition, the government is improving maternal and child health data systems to ensure accurate reporting and monitoring of cases. This is expected to help policymakers make informed decisions and quickly respond to areas with higher risks.

According to health experts, weak data systems and delays in emergency response have been among the key contributing factors to maternal and newborn deaths in some regions.

The new measures are part of the government’s broader commitment to improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that citizens, especially women and children, access safe, timely, and quality health services.

Authorities have expressed confidence that the reforms will contribute significantly to reducing maternal and child mortality rates and improving overall public health outcomes in the country.
