Chadema resumes nationwide political activities after court lifts ban

By The Respondents Reporter

Chadema has officially resumed political activities across the country following the Court of Appeal’s decision on April 15, 2026, which lifted restrictions that had previously barred the party’s leaders from engaging in political work.

The ruling has paved the way for the opposition party to reopen offices, restore internal structures, and restart public and internal political engagements after months of limited activity.

Party Secretary General John Mnyika directed all regional and zonal leaders to immediately reopen offices and resume normal operations, a move that has triggered widespread action across the country.

In the Southern Zone, Secretary Belchomans Ponera confirmed that party officials have already started working after receiving instructions from the national leadership.

He said internal meetings have been held to plan upcoming activities, including public rallies expected to begin in May 2026.

In the Northern Zone, Chairperson Wakili Samwel Welwel said offices have been reopened and internal meetings have resumed.

He added that the zone is preparing a public rally in Karatu town after notifying police authorities, in line with legal procedures.

Welwel also confirmed that the party’s disciplinary committee has started handling cases involving members accused of misconduct, stressing the need to maintain unity and discipline within the party.

In Pemba, Chairperson Omary Nassor said offices have been cleaned and reopened, with secretariat meetings already underway to guide leaders on their responsibilities. He said the executive committee will meet next week to set priorities.

In the Victoria Zone, Secretary Zakaria Obad said reopening offices has revealed operational challenges caused by the suspension period, but efforts are now focused on rebuilding structures.

He said the zone will begin public communication activities while also advocating for the release of party leaders in detention, including Chairman Tundu Lissu.

In the Coastal Zone, Chairperson Boniface Jacob said preparations are underway to launch formal programmes after reopening offices and holding consultations on priority activities.

In the Western Zone, Chairperson Wakili Dickson Matata said implementation of national directives has already begun, with offices reopened and cleaning activities ongoing as part of restoring normal operations.

In the Serengeti Zone, Chairperson Lucas Ngoto said regional leaders have been instructed to begin implementing party programmes, with a detailed activity schedule expected soon ahead of the central committee meeting.

In the Central Zone, Secretary Ahura Massoud said the party has started cleaning and preparing facilities, including areas intended for future office construction. He said full operations will resume soon after further guidance from the central leadership.

Across all zones, Chadema leaders have emphasized internal meetings, restructuring, and strengthening of party systems as key priorities in this new phase. The party is also working to fill leadership gaps and improve coordination at all levels.

The renewed activities come as the party continues to call for the release of its Chairman Tundu Lissu, who remains in detention, saying political freedoms must be respected for all leaders.

With offices now reopened nationwide, Chadema is entering a new phase of political mobilisation, focusing on rebuilding its structures and reconnecting with members at grassroots level.
