The Government has officially handed over the 2026 Uhuru Torch to Coast Region after completing a five-day tour of development projects in Dar es Salaam, where all inspected initiatives were approved.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila passed the torch to Coast Region Regional Commissioner Abubakar Kunenge on April 18, 2026, marking the continuation of the national event aimed at promoting accountability and development.

The Uhuru Torch race in Dar es Salaam began on April 13, 2026, covering all five districts—Ilala, Kigamboni, Temeke, Ubungo and Kinondoni before concluding on April 17.

Earlier, Kinondoni District Commissioner Saad Mtambule handed over the torch to the Regional Commissioner during a ceremony held at Bunju grounds.

Led by the national Uhuru Torch leader Wazo Michael Mwang'onda, the torch covered a total of 392.22 kilometres across the region.

During the tour, it visited, inspected, launched and laid foundation stones for 35 development projects valued at over TZS 113.5 billion, all of which met the required standards and were approved.

The Government said the outcome reflects strong implementation and supervision of development projects across Dar es Salaam, with no project rejected during the inspection.

In addition to project monitoring, the Uhuru Torch campaign was used to educate and mobilise citizens under this year’s theme, “Tanzania is Ours All of Us, Let Us Unite to Bring Development.”

The campaign also reinforced national efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, corruption and drug abuse.

With the torch now in Coast Region, the Government expects continued inspection and promotion of development projects as part of its broader commitment to strengthening service delivery and accountability nationwide.
