The Buhigwe District Hospital has recorded improved efficiency in emergency and critical care services following a targeted training programme conducted by experts from the Ministry of Health, aimed at strengthening life-saving services and improving the use of medical facilities in the hospital’s emergency unit.
Speaking on April 23, 2026, at Buhigwe District Hospital, the Medical Officer in Charge said the hospital received a team of health specialists from the Ministry of Health for joint supervision, practical training, and assessment of the emergency unit.
The exercise also focused on ensuring the proper use of the newly established emergency building and improving coordination in the delivery of urgent medical services.
He said the training has significantly strengthened the capacity of health workers, particularly in handling emergency and critically ill patients.
It has also equipped newly recruited staff with essential skills, while providing clear guidance on proper use and arrangement of medical equipment, treatment rooms, and service flow within the emergency department.
He added that the hospital is now calling for such training programmes to be conducted regularly, noting that continuous capacity building is key to improving response time, reducing operational gaps, and ensuring health workers are fully prepared to handle emergency cases effectively.
A nurse at the hospital, Elizabeth Mlai, said the training has greatly improved their performance in the emergency and accident unit.
She noted that staff have gained practical skills, especially in the use of ventilators and other critical care equipment used for patients in serious condition.
She explained that previously, limited exposure to modern equipment affected service delivery, but the training has now built confidence and competence among staff.
According to her, this improvement will help save more lives, strengthen emergency response, and reduce unnecessary referrals to higher-level hospitals.
On his part, Clinical Officer Makanja Malima said the Ministry of Health experts also trained staff on the effective use of modern medical equipment and devices.
In addition, they were guided on proper organization of medicines and medical supplies within the emergency unit to improve efficiency and patient flow.
He expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Health for organizing the training and emphasized the need for it to continue.
He said ongoing training will further strengthen staff skills, improve service delivery, and ensure wananchi receive faster and better-quality emergency healthcare services at Buhigwe District Hospital.
