Dar es Salaam is preparing to receive the Uhuru Torch on April 13, 2026, in a major national event expected to spotlight development projects worth TZS 113.5 billion across the region.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila has called on residents to turn out in large numbers to participate in the event, which he said remains a key national platform for promoting unity, accountability, and development.

The torch, which will arrive from North Unguja, is scheduled to cover 392.22 kilometres across the region’s five districts. During its run, it will inspect, launch and lay foundation stones for a total of 35 development projects aimed at improving social services and economic growth.

According to Chalamila, the torch will begin its journey in Ilala District on April 13, followed by Kigamboni on April 14, Temeke on April 15, Ubungo on April 16, and Kinondoni on April 17, before being handed over to the Coast Region on April 18.

He said the 2026 Uhuru Torch carries a national message focused on safeguarding peace, unity and solidarity under the theme “Tanzania is Ours All; Let Us Unite to Bring Development.”

The race also continues to support ongoing national campaigns against HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, malnutrition and corruption.

Chalamila stressed that public participation is essential to ensure that the message of the torch translates into real community impact, urging wananchi to attend events in their respective districts.

On the energy situation, the Regional Commissioner assured residents that there is no fuel shortage in Dar es Salaam despite recent price increases.

He explained that the rising cost of petrol and diesel is driven by global market dynamics, including international conflicts, importation costs and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.

He warned against politicizing the issue, noting that the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan is implementing long-term measures to stabilise fuel supply, including improving storage infrastructure.

Chalamila also confirmed that directives issued during the recent visit by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba to the fire-affected Simu 2000 market in Ubungo are being implemented, alongside instructions from PMO-RALG authorities.

The Uhuru Torch Race continues to serve as a symbol of Tanzania’s commitment to unity and development, while also acting as a tool for monitoring the implementation and impact of public projects across the country.
