Patients across Kagera and Kigoma regions are set to benefit from safer and higher-quality healthcare services following a nationwide exercise to verify Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) data, coupled with hands-on training for healthcare workers.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health in partnership with the Prime Minister’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG) and CIHEB Tanzania under the Global Health Security project, is being conducted from March 10 to March 18, 2026. It targets regional referral hospitals, district hospitals, and high-volume health centers.

Dr. Radenta Bahegwa, the coordinator of the exercise, explained that health experts are carefully reviewing data collected on 21 key IPC indicators submitted to the DHIS2 health information system.

“The exercise aims to assess the actual implementation of infection prevention measures, ensuring that healthcare services are safe for patients, healthcare workers, and everyone visiting health facilities,” Dr. Bahegwa said.

Alongside data verification, healthcare providers are receiving practical, on-site training designed to strengthen their capacity to monitor and implement IPC measures effectively.

The training follows the World Health Organization’s guidelines on the eight core elements that guide infection prevention programs.

Bi. Upendo Msanjila, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager at CIHEB Tanzania, emphasized that accurate data collection and monitoring will help the government and its partners design effective strategies to improve healthcare services.

“This effort will not only enhance patient safety but also elevate the overall quality of services delivered in health facilities nationwide,” she said.

With the initiative underway, Tanzanians visiting hospitals and health centers can expect safer environments and a renewed commitment to preventing infections, reinforcing confidence in the country’s health system.
