President Samia receives reports on Ngorongoro land conflicts and voluntary relocation

President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, today received official reports from two commissions on issues affecting the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

One commission assessed land conflicts within the area, while the other reviewed the implementation of the voluntary relocation program for residents.

President Samia described Ngorongoro as a unique natural heritage that must be preserved for present and future generations.

She highlighted its global importance in biodiversity conservation, tourism, human evolutionary history, and the cultural heritage of indigenous communities living in the area.

She noted that the voluntary relocation initiative was designed to protect the ecological system connecting Ngorongoro, Loliondo, and Lake Natron, which is vital for tourism and national heritage.

The President pledged that the government will continue the program, addressing gaps from the first phase and improving coordination to safeguard both the environment and the welfare of indigenous residents.

The Commission on land conflicts reported that increasing populations, livestock, and settlements have intensified pressure on land, causing environmental challenges, human-wildlife conflicts, and depletion of natural resources.

Its recommendations include reviewing relevant laws, strengthening conservation management, and promoting development outside the conservation area.

The Commission on voluntary relocation noted that the program had not met expectations due to coordination challenges, limited public engagement, and changes in implementation guidelines.

It stressed that with proper application of the proposed measures, the program could achieve its objectives.

President Samia affirmed that the government will act on both commissions’ recommendations to ensure sustainable solutions that protect public interests, preserve the environment, and promote national development.

She directed the Office of the Prime Minister to oversee implementation, with the Chief Secretary coordinating the process.
