Two Karatu Radio Journalists detained over flood report

Two broadcasters from Lumeni Radio in Karatu, Arusha Region, Nobert Hongoli and Wolter John Mbaga, have been detained following orders from the District Commissioner, Lameck Karanga.

The journalists were summoned to the DC’s office on the morning of March 27, 2026, and later taken into custody at the main police station in Karatu.

They are accused of publishing news that allegedly caused public alarm. The report, which focused on rising water levels in a local dam, highlighted residents’ fears of potential flooding and called for government intervention.

Arusha Regional Police Commander, Justine Masejo, said he was not immediately aware of the arrests but promised to follow up.

“I do not have these details yet, but I will investigate. You may also consult the District Commissioner on this matter,” he said.

Mussa Juma, Chairman of the Tanzania Media Workers’ Union (JOWUTA), confirmed that the DC has assured the journalists would be released later today.

The case underscores the delicate balance between press freedom and responsible reporting, particularly when public safety concerns are involved.
