The chairman of the Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Wilson Masilingi, visited the Geita Gold Mining Limited on March 11 as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation with stakeholders in the country’s extractive sector.

Masilingi, who was recently appointed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, said the visit aimed to introduce TEITI's new leadership to the mine’s management and to deepen collaboration to promote transparency and accountability in the industry.

“The implementation of EITI activities in Tanzania is a participatory process that requires the cooperation of all stakeholders,” Masilingi said during the visit.

During the tour, officials from the mine briefed the TEITI delegation on the development of operations since the project began, including compliance with national laws, regulations, and licensing conditions governing mineral extraction.

The mine also outlined its implementation of corporate social responsibility programmes in local councils across the Geita region, funded through allocations set aside to support community development projects.

Masilingi commended the mine for fulfilling its corporate social responsibility commitments and recognised its contribution to government revenues through the mining sector.

He also welcomed efforts by the company to increase the employment of Tanzanian nationals, noting that the majority of workers at the mine are now Tanzanians.

TEITI Executive Secretary Mariam Mgaya thanked the mine’s management for continued cooperation in implementing the requirements of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and Tanzania’s Extractive Industries Transparency and Accountability Act of 2015, which promotes transparency and accountability in the management of natural resources.

“We hope this cooperation will continue to strengthen transparency and accountability in the management of minerals, oil, and natural gas resources,” Mgaya said.

Geita Gold Mine General Manager Ashraf Suryaningrat said the company remained committed to working closely with TEITI in advancing transparency in Tanzania’s extractive sector.
