Tanzania has won two major international awards for its strong management of government debt, further boosting the country’s reputation for maintaining prudent fiscal policies.
The awards were presented during the Public Debt Management Forum organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, United Kingdom on March 26, 2026.
Through the Government Debt Management Division under the Ministry of Finance, Tanzania emerged as the overall winner in the Commonwealth Public Debt Management Awards and was also named the Best Debt Management Office in Africa.
Assistant Commissioner in the Government Debt Management Division at the Ministry of Finance, Omary Khama, received the two awards on behalf of Tanzania during the event.
The recognition reflects reforms undertaken by the government to strengthen systems for monitoring and managing public debt while ensuring borrowed funds support development priorities.
According to organisers, the awards were determined by an independent panel of experts who reviewed submissions from Commonwealth member countries.
The evaluation focused on innovation, effectiveness and sustainability of public debt management systems.
Speaking during the awards ceremony, Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Tanmaya Lal, underscored the importance of sound debt management among member states.
He said governments must continue strengthening debt management frameworks to protect their economies from global financial shocks and ensure long-term fiscal stability.
Senior Director for Economic, Youth and Sustainable Development at the Commonwealth Secretariat, Ruth Kattumuri, congratulated Tanzania for the reforms it has implemented to improve the management of public debt.
She said the achievement demonstrates the country’s commitment to building a resilient economy capable of withstanding global economic pressures.
Kattumuri added that the Commonwealth Secretariat will continue working with Tanzania to strengthen policy frameworks and systems for debt management while supporting the implementation of resolutions adopted by Commonwealth finance ministers.
The week-long forum brought together public debt management experts from across the Commonwealth to exchange experiences and discuss best practices in borrowing, managing and repaying public debt.
Tanzania’s recognition at the forum positions the country as one of the leading examples of effective public debt management in Africa and across the Commonwealth.
