Tanzania set to launch Green Reform plan to boost environmental protection

The government is preparing to roll out a nationwide Green Reform Plan aimed at transforming Tanzania’s environmental management and promoting sustainable practices across the country.

Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Hamad Yussuf Masauni, announced the initiative during a working visit to Mwanza on March 13, 2026.

The plan will focus on improving the country’s environmental health, including tree planting, urban cleanliness, and the protection of water sources, while ensuring that citizens and investors comply with conservation laws.

“Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility. For our environment to remain healthy, we must care for it ourselves. The government will continue to commend those who uphold environmental laws and take firm action against anyone found destroying it,” Minister Masauni said.

The programme is expected to cover key initiatives such as expanding tree planting to prevent desertification, creating more green spaces, improving urban sanitation, and safeguarding water sources.

Officials say these efforts will also help reduce diseases linked to poor environmental conditions.

During the visit, Said Mtanda, Mwanza Regional Commissioner, said his office is actively working to conserve the region’s environment despite challenges, including noise pollution from entertainment venues.

He called for continued government efforts to remove invasive water weeds from Lake Victoria, stressing that such actions are vital to protecting fish breeding areas and the broader aquatic ecosystem, which supports the livelihoods of thousands of residents.

Mtanda highlighted that approximately 53 percent of Mwanza region is covered by water, making the protection of lakeshores and water sources essential to sustaining the local fishing industry.

During the visit, Minister Masauni also toured areas recently affected by floods that destroyed roads, homes, and other infrastructure.

He urged for stronger environmental safeguards and climate resilience measures to mitigate the impact of natural disasters in vulnerable communities.

The Green Reform Plan reflects the government’s commitment to creating a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Tanzania while reinforcing the responsibility of every citizen to protect the environment.
