Samia mourns former Bank of Tanzania Governor Idris Rashid

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Bank of Tanzania Governor Idris Rashid, who passed away on March 13, 2026.

Dr. Rashid died at Shifaa Pan African Hospital in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

In a condolence message, President Samia said the country had lost a committed leader who made significant contributions to the development of Tanzania’s financial sector and economic management.

Dr. Rashid served as the fourth Governor of the Bank of Tanzania from 1993 to 1998, a period during which he played a key role in guiding the country’s monetary policy and strengthening the foundations of financial sector stability.

According to the President, his leadership helped reinforce institutional development in Tanzania’s financial system at a critical time of economic reforms.

President Samia also prayed for the eternal rest of the late Dr. Rashid and extended her condolences to his family, relatives and friends, as well as to the leadership and staff of the Bank of Tanzania and all Tanzanians.

“The nation has lost a leader and a dedicated public servant who made an important contribution to building strong financial institutions and advancing the country’s economic development,” President Samia said in her message of condolence.
