Six doctors from Mwanza Sekou-Toure Regional Referral Hospital were injured in a car accident while returning from a specialist medical camp at Icheja Hospital in Kwimba District, Mwanza Region.
The incident occurred on March 27, 2026, around 6:30 PM on Jojiro Road in the Maremve Village, Igongwa Ward.
According to Mwanza Regional Police Commander, Wilbord Mutafungwa, the accident involved a Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop, registration number T.231 AWT, driven by Dr. James Nkya, 38, a resident of Lumala-Pasiansi, Ilemela District.
Commander Mutafungwa explained that the doctors were returning to Mwanza City after providing specialist services in Kwimba.
Near the scene, the driver attempted to avoid a cyclist who had fallen in the middle of the dusty road. As a result, the vehicle veered off the road, hit a fence, and overturned, causing injuries to all six doctors.
The injured doctors were immediately taken to hospitals for treatment. Those admitted at Sekou-Toure Hospital include Dr. James Nkya, 38, and Dr. Self Mmka, 38, both from Ilemela District.
Dr. Stanley Makundi, 37, from Mahina, and Dr. Avetha Masawe, 35, from Buswelu, were admitted to Bugando Regional Referral Hospital.
Two other doctors, Dr. Mary Urasa, 27, from Ngudu, Kwimba District, and Dr. Frank Mgeta, 42, from Nyamh’ongolo, Ilemela District, received treatment and have since been discharged after their conditions stabilized.
Police confirmed that four doctors remain under medical care while two have been discharged. The cause of the accident was the driver’s attempt to avoid the fallen cyclist.
Commander Mutafungwa urged all road users to strictly follow traffic rules and safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
