New bridge construction expected to boost economic activities in Tarime Rural

The construction of a 41-metre stone bridge at Matongo across the Pigite River is expected to unlock economic opportunities and improve connectivity in Tarime Rural District in Mara Region, as authorities say the project will support mining, livestock trade and other income-generating activities.

The bridge, which is being built along the Matongo–Nyarwana road, is expected to ease movement between Matongo and Kibasuka wards, areas known for agriculture, livestock keeping and mining activities.

Tarime District Manager for the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), Charles Marwa, said the project will address long-standing transport challenges that have hindered economic activities in the area.

He made the remarks during a special inspection of development projects implemented through various funding sources in the district.

The bridge is being constructed through the Contingency Emergency Response Component (CERC), a facility funded by the World Bank, aimed at strengthening infrastructure and improving resilience in vulnerable communities.

Mr Marwa said before construction began, residents depended on a temporary crossing made from fig tree logs, which posed safety risks and limited transport across the Pigite River.

Residents were required to pay TZS 1,000 for adults and TZS 500 for children to cross the makeshift structure.

“The crossing was unsafe because it was constructed using tree trunks, which posed serious risks to people using it,” he said.

According to Mr Marwa, the government intervened and allocated funds for the construction of the permanent bridge to ensure safer and more reliable access for residents and traders.

He said the project has reached about 70 percent completion, while access roads covering 2.6 kilometres have already been upgraded to gravel standard.

Contractors are currently preparing to pour the concrete deck, a key stage that will enable the bridge to start serving the public once completed.

Mr Marwa said the bridge is expected to play a significant role in supporting economic activities, particularly in facilitating access to the Nyamongo mining area located in Matongo Ward.

He noted that the area hosts a livestock market that attracts traders from surrounding communities, but the Pigite River often disrupted movement during periods of flooding.

“This bridge will be a major relief for residents. During market days, when the river flooded, cattle had to swim across together with people, which was extremely dangerous,” he said.

He added that the bridge will enable livestock, traders and residents to cross safely, improving trade and access to services while enhancing livelihoods.

Residents in the area say the project will help address long-standing challenges that have affected transport and trade.

Baraka Mahanga Kidebe, a resident of Nyarwana Village in Kibasuka Ward, said the community had struggled for years to cross the river safely.

He expressed appreciation to the government for constructing the bridge and improving the road infrastructure in the area.

“We are grateful for the work being done because crossing the river used to be very difficult and risky,” he said.

Another resident, Nchagwa Mesenda Magige of Matongo Ward, said the lack of reliable infrastructure previously made it difficult for residents to access essential goods and services in Nyamongo, especially during market days in Matongo.

“With the new road and bridge, we believe residents will finally benefit from improved services and economic opportunities,” he said.

Authorities say the project is expected to enhance transport, strengthen local trade and support economic growth in Tarime Rural District once completed.
