Implementation of national energy efficiency strategy to begin July 1

By Our Reporter, Dar es Salaam

The government will start implementing the National Energy Efficiency Strategy on July 1 this year, aiming to promote optimal electricity use and reduce costs for consumers.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam during a high-level dialogue on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and energy labeling, Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, said the initiative is crucial for promoting responsible energy consumption.

He noted that the government recognizes energy efficiency as a key pillar of development, contributing to lower electricity costs for citizens, environmental protection, and climate change mitigation, while supporting sustainable economic growth.

Under the National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEES 2024–2034), priority will be given to implementing MEPS and energy labeling for widely used household and industrial appliances, including air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions, and electric vehicles.

Engineer Luoga explained that implementation will involve various regulatory institutions, including the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), which will oversee product quality, conduct standard testing, and ensure that marketed appliances meet energy efficiency requirements.

The initiative is expected to remove inefficient products from the market and enable consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing appliances.

It will also help reduce electricity demand, thereby lowering investment costs in energy production.

However, he acknowledged potential challenges, including limited stakeholder awareness, inadequate testing infrastructure, and initial costs for manufacturers.

To address these issues, the government plans to strengthen regulatory systems, enhance the capacity of relevant institutions including TBS, and provide public education to raise awareness about efficient energy use.

Engineer Luoga emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, and development partners to ensure successful implementation.

He also thanked development partners for their continued support in improving Tanzania’s energy sector.
