The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, yesterday on March 3, 2026 laid the foundation stone for the construction of the project of major Oil Receiving and Distribution Tanks Farm project at the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) in the Port of Dar es Salaam.
The design and construction of the Tanks Farm project is being executed by a joint venture of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co. Ltd (CRMBEG) and Wuhuan Engineering Co. Ltd, at a cost of TZS 678.6 billion, inclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT).
Additionally, under the Sixth Phase Government, TPA signed a 24 month project supervision contract worth TZS 23.2 billion with Khatib and Alami Consulting Engineering Offshore S.A.L, in collaboration with Projmors and Anova Consult Company Ltd. This brings the total project value to TZS 701.8 billion.
Speaking during the foundation stone laying ceremony, President Samia said the project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen strategic infrastructure aimed at enhancing national energy security and boosting Tanzania’s competitiveness in regional and international trade.
The Tanks Farm is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of oil reception and distribution in the country, reduce vessel waiting time at the port, and cut down demurrage costs.
Upon completion, the facility will enhance the Port of Dar es Salaam’s capacity to handle petroleum products and position it as a key energy trade hub for land linked countries in East and Central Africa.
The initiative underscores the Sixth Phase Government’s commitment to investing in transformative infrastructure projects that stimulate economic growth, increase port competitiveness, and secure long term energy supply stability.
The project is scheduled for completion within 24 months. President Samia has directed the Ministry of Transport to ensure close supervision of the project to guarantee timely completion and adherence to the required standards.
Once completed, the Dar es Salaam Port Tanks Farm is poised to become a strategic anchor for Tanzania’s energy security and a catalyst for expanding regional trade flows.
