The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has commended the effective use of tax revenue in the construction of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, describing the project as a strong example of how public funds can be transformed into strategic infrastructure that supports national development through reliable electricity supply.

The remarks were made following a working visit conducted on February 14, 2026, by TRA leadership together with Education and Communication Officers from all regions of the country.

The visit aimed to enhance understanding of how tax revenue collected by the Authority is utilized in implementing major national projects and the impact such investments have on the country’s economic and social development.

Speaking after the visit, the Director of Education and Communication at TRA, Mr. Richard Kayombo, said the visit was important in strengthening institutional appreciation of how tax revenue is converted into tangible development outcomes.

He explained that the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project is significantly increasing electricity availability, reducing power supply challenges, supporting business growth, attracting investment, and strengthening overall economic performance, which in turn expands the Government’s revenue base.

Mr. Kayombo noted that the increased power generation capacity has enhanced reliability of electricity supply for key sectors including industry, health, education, and commerce, thereby improving productivity and service delivery nationwide.

He emphasized that the project provides clear evidence that proper utilization of tax revenue results in visible and lasting benefits for national development.

Education and Communication Officers from TRA who participated in the visit stated that the experience had broadened their understanding of Government investment in the energy sector and reinforced their commitment to continue educating the public on the importance of voluntary and timely tax compliance as a foundation for sustainable development.

They further noted that the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project has become one of the major sources of electricity for the National Grid, contributing approximately 2,115 megawatts, and playing a critical role in strengthening national energy security.

Speaking on behalf of the project management, the Acting Manager for Operations and Systems Control at the Julius Nyerere Power Generation Station, Engineer Elinainyi Kalalu, said the visit was valuable in demonstrating how public funds are utilized to deliver long-term national benefits.

He added that the power station will continue to operate with professionalism and efficiency to ensure reliable electricity supply, while emphasizing the importance of sustained tax compliance in enabling the implementation of large-scale development projects.

The visit concluded by reaffirming that voluntary and timely tax payment remains a key pillar in financing major national development initiatives, including strategic investments in the electricity sector, which are essential for long-term economic growth and national prosperity.
