Tanzania is accelerating rail and maritime infrastructure development as part of efforts to enhance trade and logistics capacity.
The government stated on Wednesday during a review of the first 100 days of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s current term.
According to Chief Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project has transported more than 4.6 million passengers and over 52,000 tonnes of cargo since operations began. The Dar es Salaam–Dodoma section is operational, with further expansion underway.
On rail transport, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) linking Dar es Salaam and Dodoma has significantly reduced travel time between the commercial capital and the political capital to a few hours.
The railway project is being implemented by the Tanzania Railways Corporation, with the first phase expected to span 1,219 kilometres once complete.
At the Port of Dar es Salaam, authorities are undertaking expansion works, including the construction of 10 new berths and an increase in oil storage capacity by 378,000 cubic metres.
The improvements are expected to raise annual handling capacity from about 32 million tonnes to 50 million tonnes.
Between 2022/23 and 2024/25, the government invested 1.154 trillion Tanzanian shillings in airport construction and upgrades.
Customs collections at the Port of Dar es Salaam reached 8.256 trillion shillings between July 2024 and February 2025, compared with 7.082 trillion shillings during the same period a year earlier.
In aviation, Air Tanzania Company Limited has expanded its route network to 33 destinations, up from 23 in 2020/21, following the acquisition of additional aircraft.
