Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba today inspected the strategic crude oil pipeline project stretching from Hoima, Uganda, to Chongoleani in Tanga region, expressing satisfaction with its progress.
Dr. Nchemba described the USD 5.65 billion project as a symbol of the enduring friendship between Tanzania and Uganda.
“I acknowledge the strong commitment by our leaders, President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in driving this important initiative,” he said.
During the visit, Dr. Nchemba confirmed that the project has reached 81% completion and assured that the government will continue to ensure its proper implementation.
“We will maintain the highest standards to protect our sovereignty. As a free nation, Tanzania is fully capable of executing major strategic and developmental projects independently,” he emphasized.
The Prime Minister also issued a firm warning to individuals who register companies under the guise of being Tanzanian-owned while the real ownership lies with foreigners, aiming to exploit the Local Content policy. He warned that such practices will not be tolerated.
“There are dishonest operators who use Tanzanians to register companies, claiming them as local while the benefits go to foreigners. We are committed to empowering genuine Tanzanian businesses. Anyone caught attempting this deception will have their operations closed and will no longer be allowed to work in this country,” Dr. Nchemba stated.
He added, “Such actions are fraudulent and rob Tanzanians of rightful opportunities. We want the benefits of this project to reach our citizens, and those attempting to manipulate the system will face consequences.”
In addition, the Prime Minister instructed project managers to ensure that, upon completion, employment priority is given to Tanzanians who have contributed to the project and meet the required criteria.
Deputy Minister of Energy, Salome Makamba, highlighted that the project, which started in 2022, is expected to be completed by July 2026, with the Government of Tanzania holding a 15% stake.
