MP Jesca Mbogo urges communities to fight teenage pregnancies

The Special Seats Member of Parliament for Dodoma Region, Jesca Mbogo, has issued a strong call to citizens to take collective responsibility in protecting children from teenage pregnancies, emphasizing that a child aged 15 is neither physically nor mentally prepared to take on the responsibility of parenthood.

The MP made the remarks during the second day of her official visit to Mpwapwa District in Dodoma Region, shortly after her election.

She was addressing students from Mazae Secondary School alongside community members, where she highlighted the critical role of education, discipline, and informed decision-making in national development.

“Teenage pregnancies must not be tolerated. A 15-year-old giving birth means a child raising another child. This is unacceptable and must be confronted by families, schools, and the wider community,” Hon. Mbogo stated firmly.

She called on students to cultivate a strong commitment to personal development, noting that progress is driven by discipline, determination, and clear life goals.

“We must value development and admire those who work hard to improve themselves. When a fellow student is serious with their studies, they are investing in their future,” she said.

The MP stressed that education remains the backbone of leadership and national success, citing the country’s top leadership as an example.

“From the President to professionals such as engineers, lawyers, and teachers, education has been the key driver. There is no substitute for learning,” she explained.

Hon. Mbogo further urged young girls to take pride in education and maintain high standards of discipline, describing discipline as a non-negotiable pillar of success.

“Discipline determines performance, respect, and trust. With discipline, students succeed academically, earn the confidence of teachers, and build a strong foundation for life,” she added.

She also reminded students that parents and guardians make significant sacrifices to ensure girls access quality education, and that it is the responsibility of learners to honor those sacrifices through good conduct and commitment to their studies.

Speaking at the event, the Manager of the Legal Women and Children Support Organization, Ushindi Ndule, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of women and children, including efforts to combat gender-based violence and teenage pregnancies.

“There are institutions working to protect your rights, but self-protection begins with awareness. Young people must learn to distinguish between short-term temptations and long-term goals,” Ndule said.

In the same visit, Mbogo commended the Umoja wa Wanawake wa Chama cha Mapinduzi (UWT) in Mpwapwa District for initiating the construction of a residential house under a national program aimed at providing official accommodation for district secretaries.

Demonstrating her support, the MP contributed ten bags of cement and a cash donation of one million Tanzanian shillings, while pledging continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure timely completion of the project.

Hon. Mbogo’s visit to Dodoma Region continues to mobilize citizens, students, and local leaders, reinforcing the message that education, discipline, and responsible choices are essential tools for addressing social challenges, particularly teenage pregnancies, and for building a more resilient and informed society.
