Minister Ulega unveils rewards to boost young engineers’ innovations

Minister of Construction, Abdallah Ulega, has launched a major initiative to support young engineers, promising cash prizes, professional registration, and government contracts for innovative solutions that address Tanzania’s pressing challenges.

Speaking to the Society of Engineering Students at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) yesterday, Ulega said the program targets engineering students across the country.

“Our focus is to nurture engineers who actively solve national problems rather than producing papers with little practical impact,” he said.

The initiative includes a TZS 10 million reward to be shared among three winners with the most impactful ideas.

Winners will also receive support to register with professional boards, start their own companies, and secure government contracts to implement their innovations.

“Money is only the catalyst. Once you are registered, own a company, and have a project, you can employ others, and your innovation can generate foreign revenue for the country,” he explained.

The minister highlighted that this program complements President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s pledge of TZS 200 billion to support youth and women’s groups.

“Tanzania offers equal opportunities, and anyone with effort and knowledge can succeed,” he said, citing his own journey from UDSM student 20 years ago to cabinet minister.

Ulega also addressed emerging professional challenges, including the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in engineering and technology.

Before the minister’s remarks, CoET Dean Dr. Innocent Macha praised the contributions of engineers to national development, while UDSM Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Rose Upor, commended Ulega for engaging directly with students and outlining the country’s development priorities.
