Tanzania on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Hungary following the presentation of a copy of credentials by Hungary’s Ambassador-Designate, Katalin Nyirati.
The credentials were formally received by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, marking a new phase in diplomatic engagement between Tanzania and Hungary.
During discussions held after the ceremony, the two sides underscored the importance of expanding cooperation in key priority areas, including education, agriculture, water, and aviation.
The engagements reflected shared interests in advancing people-centred development and strengthening institutional capacity.
Education emerged as a central pillar of the partnership. Tanzania and Hungary are preparing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to renew the scholarship funding programme that supports Tanzanian students pursuing higher education in Hungary.
The new agreement, covering the 2027–2029 period, is expected to increase the number of beneficiaries under the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship beyond the current allocation of 30 students provided for under the 2023–2026 programme.
In the water sector, the two countries are set to conclude agreements aimed at completing the Biharamulo water project.
The collaboration will enable Tanzania to benefit from advanced Hungarian technologies in water purification and distribution, with the goal of improving access to clean and safe water.
The talks also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in aviation, with both governments expressing readiness to formalise partnerships that would facilitate technical exchange and capacity building in the sector.
Agriculture was another area identified for deeper collaboration. Hungary is expected to work closely with Sokoine University of Agriculture to promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise, supporting the development of skilled graduates capable of contributing to large-scale agricultural initiatives at national and international levels.
Minister Kombo congratulated Ambassador-Designate Nyirati on her appointment and assured her of Tanzania’s full support as she begins her diplomatic assignment, reaffirming the government’s commitment to further strengthening the long-standing and mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.
