Oryx Gas pushes clean cooking drive with Ramadan, lent promotion

Oryx Gas Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to clean cooking energy across the country, saying its long-term goal is to see every Tanzanian household own at least one gas cylinder.

The company’s Managing Director, Mr Benoit Araman, made the remarks in Dar es Salaam during the launch of the Pishi la Kibabe promotion, an initiative aimed at encouraging the use of clean cooking energy during the holy periods of Ramadan and Lent.

Mr Araman said Oryx Gas has been a leading advocate of clean cooking solutions in Tanzania and will continue to scale up public awareness campaigns to support the national shift away from traditional fuels such as charcoal and firewood.

“We want to expand clean cooking campaigns through practical initiatives like this, so that more consumers can accept and use clean energy solutions in their daily lives,” he said.

He noted that the coincidence of Ramadan and Lent this year presents a unique opportunity to promote not only clean cooking energy but also social cohesion, as families gather more frequently to prepare meals.

“This period allows us to talk about unity. It is a powerful message that goes hand in hand with cooking together as families and communities,” Mr Araman said.

Earlier, the company’s Marketing and Sales Manager, Mr Shaban Fundi, said the Pishi la Kibabe promotion includes a nationwide price reduction for the six-kilogram gas cylinder, which will be sold at TZS 37,000 during the Ramadan and Lent season.

Mr Fundi said customers who purchase or refill gas at selected Oryx outlets and Mangi Shop will also receive an instant iftar meal as a gesture of appreciation.

He said the campaign reflects the company’s belief that shared moments around family meals strengthen unity, particularly during religious seasons marked by fasting and prayer.

“Our message is about unity. The most meaningful moments happen when families cook together, fast together and pray together,” he said.

On pricing, Mr Fundi explained that the cost of a six-kilogram cylinder by the time it reaches Tanzania does not fall below TZS 80,000, but Oryx Gas has absorbed part of the cost to make the product affordable, selling it at TZS 40,000 under normal conditions and TZS 37,000 during the promotional period.

He added that clean cooking gas is more economical than traditional fuels, noting that an average household spends about TZS 2,000 per day on charcoal, amounting to roughly TZS 60,000 per month, compared to about TZS 40,000 for a six-kilogram gas cylinder.

He also acknowledged government support, including tax relief on gas cylinders, saying such measures have helped widen access to clean cooking energy.

Meanwhile, the Head of Bulk Gas Sales, Ms Caroline Sokwa, said Ramadan and Lent are periods when Muslims and Christians alike focus on prayer, reflection and family life.

“Families prepare better meals during this time, especially in the evenings. Through the Pishi la Kibabe campaign, we are encouraging families to cook together while making clean energy more affordable,” she said.

Ms Sokwa called on Tanzanians to embrace unity and continue praying for peace and development during the holy season.
