The government has vowed to end transport challenges in Dar es Salaam, promising residents fast, reliable, and modern public transport services.
Dr. Jim Yonazi, Secretary-General of the Prime Minister’s Office for Policy, Parliament, Coordination, and Persons with Disabilities, and Chair of the DART Project Management Committee, made the announcement on 27 February 2026 after inspecting key transport infrastructure in the city. He said the government has invested heavily in upgrading public transport.
During the visit, the committee toured the Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART) Agency and the UDART bus operating company, reviewing the progress of ongoing investments.
“It is the government’s firm commitment to make Dar es Salaam’s transport system modern, efficient, and responsive to the needs of citizens. We have seen the infrastructure and the ongoing efforts to improve services,” Dr. Yonazi said.
He noted that new buses have started arriving, a step that will place Dar es Salaam among Africa’s cities with advanced public transport.
Most of these buses will run on natural gas, supported by government-built refueling stations to ensure easy access.
Dr. Yonazi also highlighted digital payment systems that will allow commuters to pay fares using special cards without queuing, making the service more convenient and efficient.
He assured the public that all damaged buses will be repaired and returned to service to strengthen transport availability.
UDART Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Said Tunda, said the goal is to restore convenience and reliability for city commuters.
He urged dala-dala operators to continue providing services while the government works to improve cooperation, especially for those licensed to use priority lanes.
These measures demonstrate the Sixth Phase Government, led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, commitment to improving citizens’ lives through robust infrastructure and quality public services.
