Ugunga Secondary School recorded a 95 percent pass rate in the 2025 Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE), with 58 out of 61 registered candidates passing, according to results released by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA).
Three candidates, equivalent to about 5 percent of those registered, were absent from the examinations. No candidate who sat for the exams failed outright, but weak performance in key subjects, particularly Basic Mathematics, pushed a large share of candidates into lower divisions.
The school posted an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.4618, classified as Grade C (Good). Only one candidate achieved Division I, while 11 candidates were placed in Division II.
A further 17 candidates attained Division III, and 29 were placed in Division IV, highlighting a concentration of results at the lower end of the grading scale.
Male candidates performed better in the top divisions. The only Division I candidate was male, and males accounted for 10 of the 11 candidates in Division II.
Female candidates were more concentrated in Division IV, pointing to a gender gap in higher academic performance.
Subject-level data shows strong outcomes in languages and humanities. All candidates passed Kiswahili and English Language, both recording Grade C average performance.
History and Geography also posted near-universal pass rates with Grade C outcomes, indicating consistent results in arts-based subjects.
Science subjects delivered mixed results. Biology recorded a high pass rate, though the average grade remained at a satisfactory level.
Chemistry and Physics had moderate performance, but the number of candidates offering these subjects was relatively low.
Basic Mathematics emerged as the school’s weakest subject. Only 11 out of 58 candidates passed, translating to a pass rate of just 19 percent.
The subject recorded a GPA of 4.7241, graded as Fail, and was the main factor behind the high number of candidates placed in Division IV.
Civics also underperformed compared to other humanities subjects, registering a satisfactory average grade rather than a strong pass.
Overall, the results show that while Ugunga Secondary School maintained a high overall pass rate in the 2025 CSEE, structural weaknesses in mathematics and selected subjects continue to limit progression into higher divisions, underscoring the need for targeted academic interventions
