TRA launches IDRAS training to improve tax services for businesses

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has officially launched training for the Integrated Domestic Revenue Collection System (IDRAS), with 60 institutions set to begin offering direct services to business operators and taxpayers. The rollout is scheduled to be fully operational by February 9, 2026.

TRA’s Commissioner for Domestic Taxes, Alfred Mlegi, revealed the plan during the opening of the IDRAS training on January 21, 2026. He explained that the initial phase connects 60 institutions, with the ultimate goal of linking 300 across the country to streamline service delivery and reduce the need for taxpayers to visit TRA offices.

“The training ensures that business operators understand how to use the system effectively and avoid potential challenges,” Mlegi said.

The IDRAS platform includes 17 modules, 15 of which are ready to operate, while the remaining audit and investigation modules are still under development.

The system replaces multiple legacy platforms, which previously caused confusion and inefficiencies, providing a single, unified platform for all tax-related activities.

“This system is designed for citizens, making tax payments easier, keeping accurate records of goods bought and sold, handling objections, and collecting data to improve tax estimation. It will also reduce complaints about unfair taxation,” Mlegi explained.

He added that the system addresses past concerns regarding the mandatory use of Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs), as taxpayers will now be able to issue receipts directly through the platform.

Pendo Lukas, representing the Chairman of Business Operators in Dar es Salaam, expressed confidence in IDRAS, noting it will eliminate disputes and challenges previously faced by businesses.

“We believe the system will empower every business operator to manage their tax obligations independently, ensuring transparency what you use is what you pay,” she said.

Lukas called on business operators to adopt the system and continue supporting TRA’s efforts to improve service delivery.

She commended TRA for modernizing its operations, making tax processes more business-friendly and reducing conflicts and tax evasion.

TRA’s IDRAS initiative marks a significant step in transforming tax administration in Tanzania, offering a more efficient, transparent, and taxpayer-focused service.
